ASTM demonstrates reproducibility of TCLP test method for glassware

The ASTM Ceramic Whitewares Committee (C21) has completed a round robin testing program that demonstrated the reproducibility of a method to apply the Toxicity Charactaristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test to glass. The method was developed by Ceram Research for SGCDpro. Tests were conducted by Alfred University, Ceram Research, Rutgers University and Scientific Control Laboratories using sample bottles decorated by Stanpac Inc., Smithville, ON.

SGCDpro staff met with Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH) members at their October meeting to discuss an extension of the model glass packaging exemption beyond its current January 1, 2005 limit. The TPCH members had requested that SGCDpro work to establish a standardized method for grinding glass for TCLP testing, and the TPCH state members in attendance indicated that they will consider an extension in the next few months.

Ceramic Bulletin published the complete TCLP test method in their October issue, and the ASTM Committee is now in the process of balloting the method for official approval.
